New Styled Product Photos by Holly Booth!

You may have read in a recent post about what I’ve learned in 2014 and how I outsourced my product photography to a professional stylist and photographer, Holly Booth.

Aquamarine Geometric Print 02

It was starting to frustrate me spending many hours setting up a shoot in my studio, for the shots to not come out quite how I expected (or anywhere near). My main issues were:

  • Not enough natural light
  • Changing light conditions during one session
  • Not knowing how to style shots
  • Lack of the right props

My biggest issue however was taking lots of photos that looked great on my camera’s LCD but that later turned out too dark – so frustrating! Here are some of the shots Holly took for me, you can see the rest at http://www.sweetoxen.co.uk.

As you can see Holly has nailed it! You can check out her website for more amazing examples of her work. She was a pleasure to work with – thank you Holly!

Changes

I recently decided to have a bit of a revamp of both my product range, and my website. I’ve taken out a few designs I’m no longer totally happy with, that no longer fit in with my collection and/or haven’t been as popular as others. I guess the key is to keep refining the designs within the collection so that they 100% reflect my own visual style, and will continue to complement designs I am currently working on. Some designs will be discontinued, and others will remain with changes to colour palette (for example my ever popular circle prints are now available in a more limited colour range).

I’ve noticed a huge shift over the last couple of years in my own taste in art, design, interiors and also fashion. Previously, I was pretty obsessed with pattern, and don’t get me wrong I do love geometric pattern very much, but I have completely veered away from stereotypical girly floral patterns in the last year or so, both in clothing and in our home. I’ve totally gone off it, and seem to prefer more the more minimal/clean/simple aesthetic.

I’ve also made changes to my ever popular YAY! Occasion Cards. I’ve been so thrilled with the reception this collection has had but felt they needed a refresh going forward into 2015. To give them a revamp I have simply chosen a more varied colour palette to link through the range while giving each card design it’s own relatively gender neutral colour-way. Pink is not just for girls, and blue is definitely not just for boys.

Keep your eyes on the Sweet Oxen website over the next few weeks – I have some exciting new designs to add, and more to feature on the blog including my work for Young Gold Teeth, photo-posts and another ‘Obsessions’ post.

Brand New Sweet Oxen Website

So I’ve finally re-done my entire Sweet Oxen website, to include my own online shop and Contact Form…! Hopefully it will help me to build on the Sweet Oxen brand, reach more customers and keep me nice and busy for a while 😉

I’ve been working on building the site for a few weeks, and now it is launched, I hope to concentrate on finalising my Autumn and Winter Collections before planning for Spring. I have a lot of work to do 🙂 so thanks to everyone for their ongoing support, encouragement and suggestions.

Do you have any suggestions or comments on my new website? Let me know via Comments or contact me via jennifer@sweetoxen.co.uk. I want it to work for everyone so feedback is always welcome.

Sunday (Up)Market – Brick Lane, London

Last Sunday I traded at Sunday Upmarket on Brick Lane, London, UK. I was really quite nervous but it all went swimmingly, and I had a very helpful assistant (best friend Claire) to help me out with setting up and so on.

Sweet Oxen at Sunday Upmarket

We weren’t in too bad a spot (although it seemed busier towards the food stalls) and I sold quite a lot of Greetings Cards and a couple of prints. I was a bit disappointed to have not sold a few more prints but delighted to hear lovely things from people, even if they didn’t buy anything. I got some great feedback and for my first ever Market I was pretty happy. It isn’t just about the selling after all but the fact you get to meet  your customers/potential customers face to face and really get to understand what they are looking for.

Next time I definitely need to take a large amount of fabric (pale green/turquoise…naturally) to hang around the stall, as it was quite a bit bigger than I had visualised and my prints were somewhat lost in the dresses of the lady behind me! I think I am also going to source some heavier paper stock for my A4 and A5 prints – but more on that another time.

I’m hoping to trade there in September and perhaps again towards Christmas. Brick Lane has such a fantastic atmosphere and I was very impressed with the quality of the other stalls – I found some fab acrylic jewellery by I Am Acrylic, and totally awesome geometric cushions and shower curtains by Sophie Home that I am going to have to remember for when we move in November…

Sunday Upmarket is on every Sunday at the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane from 10-5pm. Lots of wonderful and very varied stalls, along with excellent food from all around the world for very reasonable prices. Not to be missed!
