Last Sunday I traded at Sunday Upmarket on Brick Lane, London, UK. I was really quite nervous but it all went swimmingly, and I had a very helpful assistant (best friend Claire) to help me out with setting up and so on.
We weren’t in too bad a spot (although it seemed busier towards the food stalls) and I sold quite a lot of Greetings Cards and a couple of prints. I was a bit disappointed to have not sold a few more prints but delighted to hear lovely things from people, even if they didn’t buy anything. I got some great feedback and for my first ever Market I was pretty happy. It isn’t just about the selling after all but the fact you get to meet your customers/potential customers face to face and really get to understand what they are looking for.
Next time I definitely need to take a large amount of fabric (pale green/turquoise…naturally) to hang around the stall, as it was quite a bit bigger than I had visualised and my prints were somewhat lost in the dresses of the lady behind me! I think I am also going to source some heavier paper stock for my A4 and A5 prints – but more on that another time.
I’m hoping to trade there in September and perhaps again towards Christmas. Brick Lane has such a fantastic atmosphere and I was very impressed with the quality of the other stalls – I found some fab acrylic jewellery by I Am Acrylic, and totally awesome geometric cushions and shower curtains by Sophie Home that I am going to have to remember for when we move in November…
Sunday Upmarket is on every Sunday at the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane from 10-5pm. Lots of wonderful and very varied stalls, along with excellent food from all around the world for very reasonable prices. Not to be missed!
